The important role of HEIs in promoting level 3 maths

Session description

This session will provide a summary of MEI’s latest work relating to the promotion of Level 3 Mathematics qualifications for progression to the study of a range of undergraduate courses, both in STEM and non-STEM disciplines. There will be opportunities for discussion of the key themes relating to this area of our work.

This session is suitable for anyone teaching A level or advising students choosing A level Mathematics and other level 3 Maths courses, and for anyone involved in higher education admissions in related disciplines.

About the speakers

Paul is MEI’s Deputy Director for Student Engagement and helps to oversee the design, development and delivery of student support activities, including those provided through the AMSP. He leads the AMSP’s Further Mathematics tuition programme and contributes to the delivery of post-16 statistics professional development. As well as being a classroom teacher in the UK and overseas for over 25 years, Paul was deputy head of an international school for 8 years. He has been an examiner for Further Mathematics and taught the core and optional elements of all four current specifications. He has presented at national and international conferences

Chris is a Maths Education Support Specialist for MEI and is also a Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Essex. After obtaining his BSc in Mathematics, Chris completed a Primary PGCE and taught in a primary school before returning to university to study for a PhD in Pure Mathematics. His subsequent work has included lecturing at universities and working for the AMSP and its predecessors as an Area Coordinator in the East of England.
